Exhibition Content
This exhibition consists of two series by Tomohide Ikeya: "OCEAN" and "BREATH".
OCEAN
A series expressing the memory of the sea and the circulation of water. Through the flow of water and the movement of waves, this series visualizes the eternal cycle of water on Earth and the ancient memories of the sea inscribed within us. Water is the source of life, and as the medium connecting all life on Earth, its mystical beauty and power are expressed in these works.
BREATH
A series expressing the vitality of human life by photographing people underwater, where they cannot breathe naturally. By capturing the moment of held breath in an environment where humans cannot naturally survive, the series reveals both the fragility and strength of humans on the boundary between life and death. Through these tension-filled expressions, the essence of life and the challenge of human limitations are reflected.
Artist Statement
By juxtaposing the "OCEAN" and "BREATH" series, I explore the multifaceted relationship between the element of water and human beings. Contrasting the eternal memory of the sea with the momentary breath of humans, I hope to provide an opportunity to contemplate our origins, our future, and the possibilities of humanity. By reconsidering our relationship with water, which constitutes a large part of our bodies, I aim to evoke each viewer's inner memories about coexistence with nature and the mystery of life.
