The OCEAN Series: Exploring Human-Nature Relationships
Ikeya's signature series "OCEAN" comprises conceptual works that explore the complex interrelationships between human activity and the natural environment. These seascapes, from which artificial elements have been meticulously removed through digital processing, attempt to recreate primordial nature, yet cannot erase the human traces inscribed even at the microscopic level. Within this very impossibility lies a quiet inquiry into the ways humans and nature might coexist.
Material and Technique: Bridging Tradition and Technology
The foundation of each work incorporates lime plaster mixed with sand collected from the photographed locations, while the textured surfaces of charred wooden panels symbolize civilization's transformation of nature. This fusion of traditional fresco painting techniques with contemporary technology illuminates the presence of the "invisible" within what we call "nature."
Nakagawa Canal: A Landscape of Invisible History
For this exhibition, we have chosen the Nakagawa Canal as a site that resonates deeply with "OCEAN." Once a vital artery supporting Nagoya's industry and logistics, now having fulfilled its historical role, the Nakagawa Canal represents a landscape of "invisible history" where urban memories accumulate in layers. The sediment settled on the riverbed, the abandoned construction materials—these too are quiet traces left by the city's endeavors.
Collaborative Creation: Artist, Children, and Community
This exhibition presents not only Ikeya's works but also collaborative pieces created when children walked along the Nakagawa Canal, collected sludge and shells from the riverbed, mixed them with plaster, photographed the process, and transformed these into artworks through the technical expertise of local company Kondo Printing. Through this intersection of artist, children, and local enterprise, a creative space emerged where nature and artifice, memory and present, past and future overlap and interweave, giving rise to new perspectives.
Resonance and Revelation
"OCEAN" resonates with the landscape of the Nakagawa Canal, simultaneously rendering visible both the vanishing scenery and the enduring presence of this waterway. The dialogue between these works reveals how water serves as a medium of memory, carrying within its depths the accumulated traces of time and human presence.
**An Invitation to Listen**
We hope that visitors will, through these works, quietly attune their senses to the liminal space between "what changes" and "what remains unchanged," listening closely to the silent dialogue that flows between transformation and permanence.

この度、PALET.NUでは「OCEAN × 中川運河 ― 写真展 まちは⽔にねむり 声をまつ」と題し、写真家・池⾕友秀⽒による展覧会を開催いたします。 池⾕⽒の代表作「OCEAN」は、⼈間の活動と⾃然環境の複雑な相互関係を 探求するコンセプチュアルな作品群です。 デジタル処理によって⼈⼯物を丁寧に取り除いた海の⾵景は、原初的な⾃然 の再現を試みながらも、微粒⼦レベルにまで刻まれた⼈間の痕跡を消し去る ことはできません――その不可能性の中に、⼈間と⾃然の共存の在り⽅を静 かに問いかけます。
作品の基盤となる漆喰には撮影地の砂が練り込まれ、焼いた⽊板の凹凸は⽂ 明による⾃然への変容を象徴します。フレスコ画の伝統技法とテクノロジー が融合した表現は、私たちが「⾃然」と呼ぶものの中にある“⾒えないも の”の存在に光を当てるものです。 そして今回、「OCEAN」と呼応する場として中川運河を選びました。かつ て名古屋の産業と物流を⽀え、現在はその役割を終えた中川運河は、都市の 記憶が積層する“⾒えない歴史”の⾵景です。河底に沈む泥、使われなくな った建築廃材――それらもまた、都市の営為が遺した静かな痕跡といえるで しょう。 本展では、池⾕⽒の作品とともに、⼦どもたちが中川運河を歩き、 河底のヘドロや⾙を採取し、漆喰と混ぜ、写真を撮影し、地域企業・近藤印 刷の技術によって作品化した共作も展⽰しています。
アーティスト、⼦ども、地域の企業が交わることで、⾃然と⼈⼯、記憶と現 在、過去と未来が重なり合うような創作の場と新たな視座が⽣まれました。 「OCEAN」が中川運河の⾵景と共鳴し、中川運河の失なわれゆく⾵景や普 遍的に佇む⾵景を同時に可視化します。 ご来場の皆さまには、作品を通して“変わりゆくもの”と“変わらずに在る もの”のあわいに、そっと⽿を澄ませていただければ幸いです。

Photographer Tomohide Ikeya, who has been observing oceans around the world, presents a photography exhibition that dialogues with the memories of the Nakagawa Canal.
The invisible relationship between humans and nature explored in his "OCEAN" series resonates with the quiet landscape of the Nakagawa Canal, which once served as an industrial waterway. Mud collected from the bottom of the canal and dormant construction waste are transformed into new forms through the technical collaboration with local company Kondo Printing.
Alongside Ikeya's works, creations by children who participated in the "Canal Exploration! Children's Art Lab" workshop will also be exhibited.
◆Workshop Report◆
During the "Canal Exploration! Children's Art Lab" workshop held on May 10-11, children collected mud from the Nakagawa Canal and mixed it with plaster to create the foundation for their artworks. They walked along the canal with Tomohide Ikeya, taking photographs of the surroundings. The completed works will be displayed in this exhibition.

On May 11, a talk session themed "Landscape and Memory" was held between photographer Tomohide Ikeya and artist Tsumugi. They engaged in deep dialogue about the relationship between human activities and the natural environment, and the memories inherent in landscapes.

世界の海を見つめてきた写真家・池谷友秀が、中川運河の記憶と対話する写真展を開催します。
「OCEAN」シリーズが探る人と自然の目に見えない関係性は、かつて産業の水路として時を刻んだ中川運河の静かな風景と呼応します。運河の河底から採取した泥や、眠っていた建築廃材に、地域企業・近藤印刷の技術が重なり、新たなかたちへと生まれ変わります。
池谷氏の作品とともに、「うんがたんけん！こどもアートラボ」のワークショップに参加した子どもたちの作品も展示されます。
◆ワークショップレポート◆
5月10〜11日に開催された「うんがたんけん！こどもアートラボ」では、子どもたちが中川運河の泥を採取し、漆喰に混ぜて作品の土台を制作。池谷友秀氏とともに運河を散策しながら写真撮影を行いました。制作した作品は本展で展示されます。

5月11日には池谷友秀氏と美術作家・紬氏による「風景と記憶」をテーマにしたトークセッションが行われました。人間活動と自然環境の関係性、風景に宿る記憶について深い対話が交わされました。
