The Moon's Guidance — That Which Marks the Rhythm of Life
Just as the sun gave light and heat to life, so too is the moon an indispensable presence for life on Earth. The ebb and flow of the tides, born of the moon's gravitational pull, have urged on the evolution of living things and marked out the rhythm of life.
Night is a time of stillness that ought not to be filled up with artificial light. A sea lit by moonlight alone reminds us of the natural rhythm that life was always meant to hold.
In this work, through the image of hair — which endures without ever returning to the earth — enveloping the memory of life (DNA), I express a mysterious nocturnal world in which life and death lie side by side. Though hair feels no pain, as an unmistakable proof of life it carries a message that leads onward to the next generation.
The moon's light, rising out of the dark night, illuminates the boundary between life's most fundamental desire and the death it cannot escape. This tense silence is depicted as an essential part of life itself. The thought of memento mori ("remember that you must die") embedded in the work brings into relief, at once, the transience and the preciousness of life.
In contemporary society, does erasing the night with artificial light not threaten the natural workings that life was always meant to hold? The quiet hours beneath the moonlight are a precious gift to all living things.
The MOON series explores the influence the moon has had upon the rhythm and the evolution of life, and — through the symbolic motifs of water and the human body — expresses the essential duality of life, in which life and death, creation and dissolution, dwell together. Through this work, we are able to reflect deeply on the mystery and the dignity of life.
